A global warming agreement promotes renewable energy as part of the
energy transition. However, ten ASEAN countries rely on 80% fossil fuel energy
for their economic growth, making this transition challenging, as they emitted 4.7%
of global CO2 in 2020. Developing countries, such as those in ASEAN, are currently
facing a paradoxical situation. If fossil fuels are consumed, economic growth will
continue. In this situation, we sacrifice our environment to allow it to be degraded
in the name of promoting economic growth. There is an alternative to consuming
energy, which is renewable energy or green energy. Even though the ASEAN
countries have abundant clean energy resources, they must prepare this energy for
primary energy consumption. The need for an immediate energy transition in
ASEAN countries is paramount. Shifting behavior, governance processes, and
adopting clean energy resources are crucial to achieving green growth and
sustainable development in the ten ASEAN countries.
This book adopts a cross-functional approach to social, economic, and
environmental disciplines, as reflected in my dissertation on the energy transition
and sustainable development, employing a mixed-methods sequential explanatory
research design. This book provides the model of the energy transition that impacts
sustainable development. It identifies energy security, energy democracy, energy
citizenship, energy transition, national factors, and sustainable development as the
key factors in achieving the energy transition, ultimately leading to sustainable
development. Energy security provides the understanding to secure energy demand
and supply in macroeconomic conditions. Energy democracy provides the
democratization of fossil fuel energy. Energy citizenship equips individuals and
communities with the knowledge to support the energy transition.
